DPP Central Executive Committee concerning the Statement of Presidents Obama and Hu
Regarding the Nov. 17 Joint Statement announced after the Obama/Hu meeting, the
DPP has the following statement:
1. In their Joint Statement, the US stated that it "follows its one China policy and abides by the principles of the three U.S.-China joint communiques", but there is no mention of the Taiwan Relations Act’s concern for security in the Taiwan Strait. This ignores the reality of Taiwan's sovereignty and China's military threat against Taiwan. This is a taste of the poisonous fruit of the Ma Administration's "diplomatic truce" and pro-China policy, with grave harm to Taiwan's national interests.
2. This is the first time the U.S. has stated it respects China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, a statement which is a great setback in Taiwan-US relations. Faced with this great setback to Taiwan's sovereignty, President Ma not only misjudges the harm to Taiwan of this development, he is complacent in the face of it. He seeks no clarification but considers this to be the best of times for U.S.-China-Taiwan relations. We strongly protest this stance.
3. To rectify the Taiwan-U.S. relationship and to fight for Taiwan's best interests in the U.S.-China-Taiwan triangular relationship, we demand that the Ma Administration take its responsibility seriously, that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs seek clarification from the U.S. government, seek a remedy to this issue and do a serious review of its efforts with the U.S.
